Roman Herrodian Oil Lamp

DESCRIPTION:

This large oil lamp dates from the Herodian dynasty, a Jewish dynasty of the Judaea Province during 30 BC – 70 AD. Handmade from terra cotta, this lamp bears the work of the artisan who shaped it so many years ago. The enlarged circular base that held the oil is not quite perfect, a result of the rudimentary techniques used to create this ancient artifact. The base opens outward to an extended mouth where a dark ring surrounds the opening from the old flame that charred the terra cotta.
