A Bronze Byzantine Oil Lamp Chandelier
The Byzantine Empire was the direct continuation of the ancient Roman state after Rome’s traditional society collapsed under poor leadership and outward encroachment. The result was a society steeped in Roman arts and culture, yet distinct in its use of the Greek language and Orthodox religion.
This beautiful bronze chandelier was produced in the early years of the Byzantine Empire. The techniques used to create this piece were surely rooted in the technology of ancient Rome, yet the simple geometric designs show point to a new aesthetic that eschewed some of the more flamboyant constructs of Rome’s decadent society. This wonderful piece dates from approximately 400 AD – 600 AD and is in excellent condition.
