A Decorated Byzantine Bronze Ring
This spectacular ring comes to us from the ancient Byzantine Empire. The tiny braids along the base of the ring’s head continue down along the band where two simple looped designs complete the ring’s minimal yet striking decoration.
The Byzantine Empire resulted from the fall of ancient Rome, so while we see the direct influence of the latter in on everything from the precious to the mundane, the Byzantines distinctly infused their objects with religious symbolism. This may explain the ornamentation of this bronze ring, possibly worn in reverence to a higher being. This piece remains in good condition and dates from approximately 200 AD – 400 AD.
