A Roman Marble Statuette of a Woman

DESCRIPTION:

This Roman woman’s small round face is worn, yet we can still make out a slight smile and a downward sloping brow that evokes the humanist ideal sought by many of Rome’s ancient artists. Her simple hair and creased robes seem to emphasize the simplicity of her stance, while her arms hint at a gesture erased by time. This short statuette would have been commissioned to pay respect to its subject, yet we can assume that she would have been of modest means judging by its relatively humble size. She stands 26 cm in height and comes with an attractive stand for display. She remains in good condition and has been cleaned and restored in order to maintain her superb quality. The statuette dates from approximately 200 AD – 300 AD.
